A collaborative operation between West Midlands Police and Walsall Council has transformed a town centre car park previously plagued by anti-social behaviour and criminal activity.
The Union Street multi-storey car park had become a hotspot for drug misuse, fly-tipping, rough sleeping, and abandoned vehicles — sparking numerous complaints from residents and local businesses.
In response, Town Centre St Matthew’s neighbourhood officers joined forces with the Safer Streets Summer Team and Walsall Council departments, including community safety, protection asset management, and parking enforcement. A joint inspection on 15 July was followed by a full-scale clean-up operation on 25 July.
During the clean-up, hazardous waste including used needles and dumped rubbish, was cleared, and abandoned vehicles were removed. Rough sleepers were also engaged with and supported as part of a wider safeguarding approach. The site has now been secured to prevent further misuse.
Sergeant Alex Backrath, neighbourhood policing manager for Walsall, said: “This is a strong example of what can be achieved through partnership working. We listened to concerns about drug use and other anti-social behaviour at the car park and took decisive action. The space is now clean, secure, and safer for the public.”
Councillor Adam Hicken, Walsall Council’s Portfolio Holder for Enforcement and Safe Communities, added: “This operation sends a clear message — we will not tolerate the abuse of public spaces. Our teams worked closely with police to remove hazards and stop ongoing misuse. We remain committed to taking firm enforcement action wherever necessary.”
The initiative is part of the ongoing #SaferStreetsSummer campaign, a nationwide programme focused on tackling anti-social behaviour, retail crime, and street-level disturbances in town centres across the UK. Patrols and business engagement activities continue in Walsall to ensure public safety and uphold community standards.
