A tragic accident in Belgium has claimed the lives of four people, including two teenagers, after a train collided with a school bus in the town of Buggenhout on Tuesday morning. The devastating crash has shocked the nation and prompted an outpouring of grief from government officials and the public alike.
According to Belgium’s transport minister, Jean-Luc Crucke, the victims included two teenage students, the bus driver, and another adult passenger. Several others were reportedly injured in the collision, while emergency services rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance and secure the area.
Initial reports from railway operator Infrabel indicated that the safety systems at the railway crossing were functioning properly at the time of the incident. CCTV footage reportedly showed that the warning lights were flashing red and the barriers were lowered when the school bus entered the crossing. Authorities have since launched an investigation to determine how the tragedy occurred despite the safety measures being in place.
“My first thoughts are with the victims, but also with those who were injured and their families,” Mr Crucke said as he expressed condolences following the crash. Railway officials also described the incident as heartbreaking, adding that their immediate concern remained with the victims and their loved ones.
Belgium’s interior minister joined other political leaders in mourning the victims. In a message posted on X, he said he had learned of the tragedy “with great dismay” and extended sympathies to all those affected. Flanders president Matthias Diependaele also paid tribute, thanking emergency responders for their swift actions at the scene.
Annick De Ridder, Belgium’s minister for public works, urged caution against drawing early conclusions about responsibility for the accident. Speaking to local media, she said it was “too early” to assign blame as investigations were still ongoing.
Reports suggested there were approximately 100 passengers on board the train at the time of the collision, although no train passengers were injured. Images from the scene showed heavily damaged wreckage, emergency vehicles, and rescue workers carrying out operations around the railway crossing.
The incident has reignited discussions around railway crossing safety in Belgium and across Europe, particularly involving school transport and busy commuter routes. For now, however, the focus remains on supporting the grieving families and communities affected by one of the country’s most tragic transport accidents in recent years.
