Charting a New Course: Former Indian Navy Captain’s Family Builds Self-Sustaining Home on the Sea

After years of service in the Indian Navy, Captain Gaurav Gautam has once again taken to the waves — but this time, not in uniform and not aboard a warship. Alongside his wife, Vaidehi Chitnavis, and their 12-year-old daughter, Kaeya, Gautam has built a floating, solar-powered home that runs on sunshine, seawater, and a dream seven years in the making.

The family’s journey began with a vision: to live a life of freedom, sustainability, and constant discovery. Drawing on Gautam’s naval expertise, they designed a vessel that could withstand long voyages, generate its own power through solar panels, and purify seawater for drinking and cooking.

“This is more than just a home — it’s a statement,” Gautam said. “We wanted to show that you can live fully, travel widely, and still respect the planet.”

Vaidehi, an artist and writer, sees their new life as a creative adventure, one that allows them to immerse themselves in diverse cultures while maintaining an environmentally conscious footprint. Young Kaeya has taken to the sea with enthusiasm, balancing her schooling with exploring marine life and learning navigation from her father.

The vessel is equipped with modern comforts — a compact but functional kitchen, workspaces with satellite internet, and living quarters that make clever use of space. Still, life on the water brings daily challenges, from unpredictable weather to the constant need for maintenance.

Yet for the family, the rewards outweigh the difficulties. “Every sunrise is different, every horizon tells a new story,” Vaidehi reflected. Now anchored somewhere between adventure and home, the Gautams see no end to their voyage. “The sea is not a barrier,” Gautam said with a smile. “It’s an open road — and we’re just getting started.”
