Dhaka Unveils ‘Bangladesh First’ Foreign Policy as New Government Sets Diplomatic Tone

Bangladesh’s new administration has signalled a recalibrated diplomatic course, with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam declaring that future engagements will be guided by a “Bangladesh first” principle. Speaking in Dhaka, she said the government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, would prioritise national interest, dignity and citizens’ welfare in all foreign policy decisions.

Emphasising renewed democratic legitimacy, Shama said the country would maintain constructive relations with all partners while acting with greater confidence. She noted that the foreign ministry, bolstered by experienced leadership, would play a central role in implementing the government’s election mandate through coordinated diplomacy.

Addressing concerns over visa restrictions imposed by several countries, she confirmed that discussions are ongoing to resolve the challenges through diplomatic channels. On the matter of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her stay in India, the minister said the issue remains under review.

Shama added that relations with India, China and the United States would be managed through both bilateral and multilateral frameworks, stressing that safeguarding Bangladesh’s sovereignty and economic interests would remain paramount.
