Sonia Kumar has called for stronger government support for family-run businesses after visiting Edward Grays of Dudley, better known as Teddy Grays, as the company celebrates its 200th anniversary. Founded in 1826, the historic sweet manufacturer remains one of Dudley’s oldest family enterprises, producing traditional hard-boiled sweets, fudges and its iconic Herbal Tablets using time-honoured methods.

During her tour of the factory near Dudley Zoo and the Black Country Living Museum, Kumar met staff and discussed the mounting pressures facing small manufacturers, particularly soaring energy and commodity costs. She later raised the issue in Parliament, urging ministers to outline what more can be done to ease the burden on energy-intensive businesses.
Highlighting Teddy Grays’ five-generation legacy, Kumar said companies rooted in local heritage must be supported to survive and grow. The firm’s leadership welcomed the backing, stressing their determination to continue trading despite rising operational challenges.
