Tiger Woods Charged with DUI After Florida Crash Raises Fresh Concerns

Golf legend Tiger Woods has been charged with driving under the influence following a car crash in Jupiter Island, Florida, an incident that has once again placed the 15-time major champion under intense public and legal scrutiny.

Authorities confirmed that Woods was arrested after his vehicle overturned during an attempted overtaking manoeuvre involving a truck towing a trailer. The crash occurred shortly after 2pm local time on Friday in the same residential area where the golfer resides. Despite the severity of the incident, Woods escaped without physical injury, though officers at the scene described him as “lethargic” and showing signs of impairment.

According to Sheriff John Budensiek, responding officers conducted a series of roadside assessments after noticing unusual behaviour. While Woods submitted to a breathalyser test that returned a zero-alcohol reading, he refused to provide a urine sample, leading to an additional charge of refusal to comply with a lawful test. Investigators believe the impairment may have been linked to medication rather than alcohol.

The golfer was taken into custody and held at Martin County Jail for approximately eight hours before being released on bond in the early hours of Saturday. In addition to the DUI charge, he faces allegations of property damage stemming from the collision. Officials have confirmed that the offences are misdemeanours and that no injuries were reported to either Woods or the driver of the other vehicle.

Details from the sheriff’s office indicate that Woods was driving at a speed significantly above the 30mph limit when the incident occurred. His vehicle reportedly tipped onto its side and slid a considerable distance before coming to a halt. The other driver, who had attempted to move aside to avoid the collision, was unharmed.

Images from the scene show Woods’ vehicle lying on its side, underscoring how serious the crash could have been. Authorities also noted uncertainty over whether Woods had been wearing a seatbelt, as he exited the vehicle through the passenger side before emergency responders arrived.

This marks the latest in a series of driving-related incidents involving Woods, whose career has been punctuated by both extraordinary sporting achievements and personal challenges. While he has made significant efforts in recent years to rebuild his reputation, the latest episode risks reopening concerns about his well-being and decision-making.

Investigations remain ongoing, and legal proceedings are expected to determine the full extent of responsibility and any resulting penalties. For now, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with impaired driving, regardless of the source.
