In a moving and colourful display of unity, culture, and national pride, the 63rd Jamaica Independence Flag Raising Ceremony was held at Victoria Square, Birmingham on Tuesday, August 6, 2025. Organised by the Association of Jamaican Nationals (Birmingham) UK (AJN), the annual event drew dignitaries, faith leaders, families, veterans, and members of the wider community to commemorate Jamaica’s Independence, celebrate its vibrant heritage, and reflect on the powerful theme: “We Are Better Together.”
Dr. Beverly Lindsay OBE, OD, DL, Chairman of the AJN and the driving force behind the ceremony, welcomed guests with warmth and a message of togetherness. “Today is not just about hoisting a flag — it is a celebration of identity, resilience, and the enduring ties that bind us as Jamaicans and as part of the wider Commonwealth family,” she said.
As the green, black, and gold flag fluttered high above the square, the event offered a blend of solemn reflection and joyful celebration, deeply rooted in Jamaican culture and its connection to the British Caribbean diaspora.
The ceremony opened with an interfaith prayer, with Bishop Paul McCalla and Bishop Dexter Edmunds offering spiritual invocations for both Birmingham and Jamaica, focusing on peace, progress, and unity. Guests joined in a minute’s silence in memory of loved ones who passed in the past year, led by Bishop Dr. Desmond Jaddoo MBE, which offered a poignant moment of community solidarity.

The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Zaffar Iqbal MBE, JP, addressed the gathering, paying tribute to the Jamaican community’s lasting impact on the social, economic, and cultural fabric of the city. “The Jamaican community has shaped our great city with its strength, values, and traditions. Events like today’s ceremony show how culture connects us and builds bridges in our society,” he said.
Adding depth to the occasion, Mrs. Cynthia Spence delivered a scripture reading from Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, reinforcing the event’s theme of unity and mutual support: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour.”

One of the most anticipated parts of the event was the raising of the Jamaican flag, executed with precision and pride by veterans and representatives of HM Forces, led by Donald Campbell. As the Jamaican National Anthem echoed across Victoria Square, many in attendance sang with pride, waved miniature flags, and shared memories of their homeland.
The ceremony also featured powerful cultural performances. Clyde Forde led the crowd in singing Jamaica’s patriotic song, “I Pledge My Heart Forever,” and saxophonist Millicent Stephenson offered a stunning instrumental rendition of beloved Jamaican melodies, adding soulful resonance to the moment.

A significant highlight was the tribute to Professor Emeritus Sir Geoff Palmer KT, OBE, CD, AJN Honorary President and Patron, recognising his lifelong commitment to social justice, education, and the Caribbean community in the UK. Dr. Lindsay and other speakers praised Sir Geoff as “a living embodiment of the values we celebrate today — justice, scholarship, dignity and service.”
In closing, Bishop Melvin Brooks offered a heartfelt prayer for Jamaica and its diaspora, followed by Dr. Lindsay’s vote of thanks to all attendees, sponsors, and partners who helped bring the event to life.
As guests mingled and shared refreshments following the ceremony, the infectious rhythms of Bob Marley’s “One Love” united the crowd in joyful dance and reflection. Many echoed the day’s unifying message: that in a time of global division and uncertainty, cultural connection and community spirit offer hope.
“Jamaica’s independence is more than a historical milestone — it is a living legacy of courage, creativity, and collective strength,” said Dr. Lindsay. “And as this year’s theme reminds us, we truly are better together.”
