Nigeria’s sprinting landscape has entered a new era after Kanyinsola Ajayi delivered a sensational performance to become the fastest Nigerian in history and the world’s quickest man of the 2026 season.

The 21-year-old Auburn University athlete electrified the NCAA East Regionals by clocking an astonishing 9.84 seconds in the men’s 100 metres, securing qualification for the NCAA Championships while simultaneously rewriting the Nigerian record books.
Ajayi’s remarkable time eclipsed the long-standing national record of 9.85 seconds set by Nigerian sprint legend Olusoji Fasuba in 2006. For nearly two decades, Fasuba’s mark stood as one of the most respected achievements in Nigerian athletics, with many believing it would remain untouched for years to come.
Instead, Ajayi produced a run that not only broke the record but also established him as the fastest man in the world this year. His 9.84-second performance currently tops the global rankings for 2026, placing him ahead of some of the biggest names in international sprinting.
The achievement represents a significant milestone for Nigerian athletics, which has consistently produced world-class talent but has waited many years for a sprinter to surpass Fasuba’s historic benchmark. Ajayi’s breakthrough signals the emergence of a new generation capable of competing with the very best on the global stage.
Even more impressive is the historical significance of the performance within collegiate athletics. The time ranks among the fastest ever recorded by a university athlete, highlighting Ajayi’s exceptional talent and his rapid development under the Auburn University programme.
Speaking after the race, the visibly emotional sprinter credited his success to preparation, discipline, and faith. He revealed that he trusted the guidance of his coaches and believed he was capable of producing a special performance when it mattered most.
“My coach told me what to do. I knew I was in good shape, so I just had to come here and execute,” Ajayi said following the race.
The signs had been evident earlier in the competition when he comfortably ran 9.90 seconds in the preliminary rounds. However, few anticipated the magnitude of what was to follow.
With the NCAA Championships approaching and major international competitions on the horizon, Ajayi has firmly established himself as one of the most exciting sprinters in world athletics. For Nigeria, his record-breaking achievement represents more than a new national mark—it is a powerful statement that the country remains a force in global sprinting and may soon be celebrating even greater successes on the world stage.
