With the Premier League season kicking off next weekend, clubs are racing against time to plug crucial gaps in their squads before the transfer window closes on September 1. Despite a staggering £1.8 billion spent this summer, many teams remain short in key areas and face urgent decisions over the coming weeks.
Manchester United, after investing heavily in their attack with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo costing around £132.5 million, still face a glaring need for a proven striker. Rasmus Hojlund’s underwhelming form last season, scoring just four Premier League goals, has increased pressure to secure reinforcements upfront. According to insiders, offers around £30 million for Hojlund are being considered amid uncertainty about his future at Old Trafford.
United are closing in on signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig for a reported €75 million plus €10 million in add-ons. At 22, Sesko stands at 6ft 5in, known for his aerial prowess and quick shooting — qualities fitting Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system. However, questions remain about his decision-making and consistency.
Amorim is also seeking midfield dynamism. “We need a midfielder who can protect the defence and quickly launch attacks,” a club source explained. United have contacted Brighton regarding Carlos Baleba, a player known for his energy and ball progression, highlighting the club’s urgency to shore up midfield.

Newcastle United face similar striker woes. Their bids for Hugo Ekitike were rejected, and Sesko appears to be leaning toward Manchester United. With Callum Wilson’s contract expired and Alexander Isak’s future uncertain despite a £110 million Liverpool bid, Newcastle are under pressure to find attacking reinforcements. Targets include Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, both praised for their pace and ability to exploit space behind defences.
Brentford, having lost top scorer Mbeumo to United and captain Christian Norgaard to Arsenal, need to rebuild. They have signed Jordan Henderson but remain without a direct replacement for Mbeumo’s creativity and goal threat. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Ansgar Knauff, with 10 goal contributions in 30 Bundesliga games, is a leading candidate.

At the back, both Bournemouth and Liverpool require centre-backs after significant departures. Bournemouth lost Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez for a combined £90 million, and Liverpool need cover following Jarell Quansah’s sale and Joe Gomez’s injury concerns. Young defenders like Rennes’ Jeremy Jacquet and Celta Vigo’s Carlos Dominguez are among the options.
Promoted Leeds United urgently need a striker to maintain their Premier League status. Their top target, Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz, is reportedly not for sale. Alternatives include Dominic Calvert-Lewin, now a free agent, and Osasuna’s Ante Budimir, valued for his aerial threat and consistent availability.
Everton faces a challenging summer, with right-side positions especially vulnerable. Manager David Moyes lamented, “We need two right-wingers ready for Premier League action, but attracting the right players at this stage has been tough.” Everton’s bids for Southampton’s Tyler Dibling fell short, while 20-year-old Lyon winger Malick Fofana is viewed as a promising but unproven option.
Moyes also seeks midfield and defensive reinforcements, having signed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and targeting Manchester City’s Jack Grealish on loan. However, much remains unresolved with a limited timeframe.

In contrast, clubs like Manchester City, Chelsea, and Brighton face the opposite problem: slimming down bloated squads. City manager Pep Guardiola has called for a smaller squad, eyeing exits for Grealish, Kalvin Phillips, and others. Chelsea continues to offload players including Joao Felix and Kepa Arrizabalaga to streamline the squad.
As the transfer window ticks down, Premier League clubs face a critical balancing act — filling key gaps without overspending or losing focus. “The next 26 days will define many clubs’ seasons,” said a football analyst. “Those who act smartly and swiftly will have a real advantage when the whistle blows for kickoff.”
