A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake has struck the southern Philippines, leaving at least seven people dead and more than 130 others injured, while causing widespread destruction across affected communities.
The earthquake, which occurred in the early hours of the day, sent residents fleeing from their homes and buildings as strong tremors shook several provinces across the region. Authorities reported that the quake caused significant damage to schools, offices, commercial establishments, and residential properties, raising concerns about the structural safety of numerous buildings.
Emergency services were immediately deployed to the hardest-hit areas to conduct search-and-rescue operations, assist the injured, and assess the extent of the damage. Local disaster management agencies confirmed that several of the fatalities resulted from collapsing structures and falling debris during the earthquake.
Hospitals and medical centres in affected areas have been treating scores of injured residents, many of whom sustained fractures, cuts, and other trauma-related injuries. Officials warned that the number of casualties could rise as rescue teams continue to reach remote communities and inspect damaged buildings.
The quake also disrupted transportation and public services in several locations. Roads suffered cracks and partial collapses, while power outages and communication disruptions were reported in multiple towns and cities. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, warning of possible aftershocks that could further weaken already damaged structures.
Educational institutions, government offices, and businesses have temporarily suspended operations as engineers carry out safety inspections. Several schools sustained visible structural damage, prompting concerns about the safety of students and staff when classes eventually resume.
Government officials have pledged immediate support for affected communities, including emergency shelter, food supplies, medical assistance, and financial aid for families displaced by the disaster. Relief centres have been established to accommodate residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed.
The Philippines is situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active regions, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence. However, the intensity of this latest earthquake has made it one of the most devastating natural disasters to affect the southern part of the country in recent years.
As rescue and recovery efforts continue, authorities are urging the public to follow safety advisories and cooperate with emergency responders while assessments of the full impact of the disaster remain ongoing.
