AJN Local Heroes Gala & Awards to Celebrate Black History Month and National Heritage Week in Birmingham

The Association of Jamaican Nationals (AJN), Birmingham UK, is set to host one of the city’s most inspiring cultural events this autumn—the AJN Local Heroes and Be Inspired Youth Gala & Awards, taking place on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the Lower Grounds (formerly The Holte Suite) at Aston Villa Football Club, Trinity Road, Birmingham.

The prestigious evening will combine celebration, recognition, and entertainment, all in honour of Black History Month and National Heritage Week. It will spotlight the outstanding achievements of local heroes and rising young talents who have contributed positively to the community.

Professor Robert Beckford, PhD, Professor of Climate and Social Justice at the University of Winchester, will serve as the guest speaker. Widely regarded as one of the UK’s most respected voices on issues of faith, culture, and social justice, Professor Beckford will use his platform to challenge and inspire attendees. “The Gala is more than an awards ceremony—it is a movement of remembrance, resistance, and renewal. It is about affirming the strength of our communities and inspiring the next generation to carry the baton forward,” he said ahead of the event.

The Gala promises a blend of cultural pride, heritage recognition, and vibrant entertainment. Guests will enjoy a rum punch reception at 6:30pm, followed by a three-course meal, coffee, and wine, with festivities carrying on until 2am.

A host of dignitaries will be in attendance, including representatives from the Office of the Lieutenancy, the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, the Jamaican High Commission, and other notable guests. The evening will also feature awards presentations by Nathaniel Peat, multi-award-winning entrepreneur, and Merisha Stevenson, public speaker and BBC radio presenter.

Music and performance will be at the heart of the celebration. Entertainment will include the soulful sounds of Steve Higgins, Jamaican tenor and cultural ambassador, alongside the electrifying performance of Millicent Stephenson, a multi-award-winning saxophonist. Rising talent Miss Anu Destiny, singer and songwriter, will also grace the stage, with additional local performers bringing further variety to the evening. To keep the energy high, DJ MixerDeuce will provide the soundtrack for dancing late into the night.

Speaking on the significance of the event, AJN representatives emphasised the importance of celebrating heritage while recognising the contributions of both elders and young achievers. “Our Gala and Awards are about honouring those who paved the way, while also giving our young people the encouragement to believe in themselves and to strive for excellence,” an AJN spokesperson noted.

The event carries the theme of celebrating heritage while building the future, reflecting both the struggles and triumphs of past generations and the promise of those to come. It is an opportunity for the wider community to come together, share stories, and uplift those who exemplify resilience, creativity, and leadership.

Tickets for the Gala are priced at £70.00, with corporate tables also available for organisations wishing to show their support. Guests are encouraged to observe the dress code of black tie or national dress, ensuring the evening exudes both elegance and cultural pride.

As one of the key events of Black History Month in Birmingham, the AJN Gala & Awards continues to grow in prestige and impact. For attendees, it offers not only fine dining and world-class entertainment, but also an opportunity to reflect on the collective journey of the Caribbean and wider Black community in the UK.

As Millicent Stephenson, one of the featured performers, remarked, “The Gala is about recognition, but it is also about inspiration. Every award, every performance, every story told reminds us of who we are and what we can achieve together.”

With its unique mix of heritage, honour, and celebration, the AJN Local Heroes and Be Inspired Youth Gala & Awards is poised to be one of Birmingham’s most memorable cultural gatherings of 2025.
